Navigating the health care system can be a challenging, and at times, an overwhelming experience. But it is doable, if you hold two truths to be true.
First, medical professionals “are practicing medicine” , and they are practicing on you. If they don’t have time to listen to your concerns, maybe you should find a new practice partner.
Secondly, have a patient advocate whenever the medical need is outside the realm of routine. A patient advocate doesn’t have to be a professional. Choose a friend or family member who cares, is a good listener, not easily intimidated, willing to ask questions, and will be engaged throughout the process.
